Sarcophagus form, the exterior mounted with two brass lion’s mask handles, an oval mother of pearl plaque on the lid and a mother of pearl escutcheon to the front.

The hinged lid opens to a fitted interior with gilt star dotted red paper lining and silk lidded compartments, the lift off tray contains a hidden musical box with winding key protruding from the underside. The section below has a decorative ruched silk padded lining.

The interior is all original, appears complete and is in excellent condition for its age.

The veneer on the exterior shows some lifting, there is some veneer missing at the lower edges and there are one or two chips to the mother of pearl elements.

There is no key.

The music box pings and dings occasionally but doesn’t really work. It doesn’t seem to be overwound, just sticky.

Great looking 200 year old box, not without faults but handsome.
