$0.00
Oil on milled board, in attractive period gilt wood and gesso frame

Frame: 19 1/4 x 16 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches

A fine period copy after the celebrated full-length portrait of George IV painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence in 1822, which is now in the Wallace Collection in London (inv. P559). The original painting was commissioned in 1822, and was the last of several famous portraits of the King painted by Lawrence. Several reduced and studio versions of the portrait are known, including one in the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art in Kentucky, and one currently with Phillip Mould in London that descended through the Royal House of Hanover, Germany.

The back of the present painting bears the original Rowney and Forster label (the manufacturer of the artist's board), which suggests the painting was completed circa 1830.

Owing to the madness of King George III, George IV reigned as Prince Regent between 1811 and 1820 when he became King. Under George's patronage, the Regency period saw a flourishing of fashion, the arts and architecture in Britain, and a new sophisticated refinement influenced by George, "the first gentleman of Europe".

Condition: The painting appears overall to be in very good condition with few if any areas of touch-up, and a few very minor accretions to the surface. The frame is of the period and likely original, and does have a few small losses here and there as shown in the images.
