A Silver Mounted Scottish Regimental Dirk
A Silver Mounted Scottish Regimental Dirk
Circa 1889
Likely for an officer in the Scottish Border Rifle Volunteers, with notched fullered blade, together with a knife and fork. The scabbard with finely engraved silver mounts hallmarked Edinburgh 1889 and stamped with maker’s mark J.R., possibly for James Rettie of Aberdeen, the uppermost mount on the scabbard engraved with an armorial crest of a crowned heart, with the motto of “Doe or Die”, for Douglas of Cavers. The handles are probably of stained rootwood, and carved with Celtic interlace, the pommels all have foil-backed cut glass mounts in imitation of Cairngorm.
Length: 18 in. (overall)
Condition: Old discoloration to the blades, ferrule missing to the small knife, the leather scabbard with some old chips and losses consistent with age.
