A Cambodian Silver Betel Box

Modeled in the form of a pumpkin, and finely chased with flowers and scrolls in reserves divided by vertical bands tapering to the underside, the cover has a silver stem and tightly scrolled leaf motifs, the interior retains some traces of the betel nut quid it originally contained.

Betel nut chewing is widespread in South Asia and evidence of the practice dates back 4000 years or more. Also known as paan, the substance is a preparation of betel nut, betel leaf and slaked lime, and it produces stimulant effects as a mild narcotic.
